The SMPM interface was developed as a smaller version of the SMP interface to accommodate the growing need for RF technology in higher-frequency, higher-density applications while maintaining a small form factor.

Challenges in High-Vibration Environments

One key challenge in high-vibration environments, such as space launches or military aircraft flight conditions, is maintaining a secure connection. While traditional SMPM push-on designs offer smaller sizes, they often fail to maintain a connection in these extreme conditions. This can lead to loose connections or improper bottoming, negatively affecting RF performance.

 

Standard threaded connectors, like an SMA, have too large of a footprint to be viable in designs with tight packaging requirements. To combat these issues, SV Microwave’s threaded SMPM interconnects provide a secure, threaded coupling nut that enhances connection reliability and ensures low mating and de-mating force. 

 

While the threaded SMPM is slightly larger than a traditional SMPM due to the coupling nut, it remains significantly smaller than an SMA, making it the perfect fit for high-frequency, small-form-factor applications. With a frequency range of up to 40 GHz, these connectors offer superior performance in compact designs.
